Chiang Mai was founded by the Thai king Mangrai in the late 13th century. The city soon became the capital of the Lan Na Kingdom. Chiang Mai was enlarged and fortified by Pha Yu and many important Buddhist temples were constructed in the city during this time. After the fall of Lan Na, Chiang Mai was occupied by the Taungoo in the 16th century. The city became a part of the Thonburi Kingdom in the 18th century. Chiang Mai grew significantly in the 20th century and is now Thailand’s second-largest city.
