About Abu Dhabi

History of Abu Dhabi

Although Abu Dhabi was first settled more than 5,000 years ago, the city’s history starts in the 19th century when Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa developed Abu Dhabi into a major trading center, prosperous due to the growing pearl industry. The sheikh signed a treaty with Great Britain and the British used Abu Dhabi as a strategic location for the continuing trade of pearls. Abu Dhabi declined in the 1930s due to the Great Depression and the rise of the Japanese pearl industry. Abu Dhabi prospered again after the discovery of oil and the city was made the capital of the UAE after the country gained its independence. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, large skyscrapers were constructed in Abu Dhabi, transforming the city into one of the most modern in the Middle East.
