History

The Italian city of Florence was founded during classical times as a Roman village dedicated to the god, Mars. A bishopric was formed during the early Middle Ages and the city’s basilica was constructed in the 11th century. Banking became the primary industry during the 13th century. Florence became one of Italy’s largest and most important city states during the Renaissance and was home to a wide array of notable painters, artists, sculptors, and scientists. Florence was briefly occupied by the Spanish during the 16th century, and the city later passed into Austrian hands, before becoming part of the United Kingdom of Italy in 1861. For a brief time, Florence became Italy’s capital, before it was succeeded by Rome. During the 20th century, the city suffered during a long German occupation. The city was liberated by Allied forces, majority British, in 1943. The city grew during the post-war period and became a popular tourist destination.
