History of the Gold Coast

Before the Europeans arrived, small groups of Australian Aboriginal Groups who were primarily hunter-gatherers settled in the Gold Coast.

Capt. James Cook was the first European to spot the Gold Coast and paved the way for the region's booming timber industry that helped supply the growth of Brisbane.

However, the timber industry soon died down and the Gold Coast has been a tourist hotspot (mainly for surfing enthusiasts) since the late 19th century.
