History

Ho Chi Minh City was founded as a small town by the Khmers in the 4th century. The settlement had a Funan temple and was renamed to Baigaur in the 11th century. Although originally a part of Cambodia, Ho Chi Minh City was conquered by Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty in the 17th century. The city was ceded to France after the Treaty of Saigon and many colonial buildings were constructed by the French during the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1949, Emperor Bao Dai made Ho Chi Minh City, then known as Saigon, the capital of the independent State of Vietnam. After Vietnam was partitioned, Ho Chi Minh City became the capital of South Vietnam but after north and south united, Saigon was renamed to Ho Chi Minh City and lost its status as a capital city. In the new united nation of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City became the largest economic hub and a tourist destination. Ho Chi Minh City is also one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia.
