History

Nantucket was originally settled by the Wampanoag Native Americans and the island was purchased as a proprietary colony by a merchant named Thomas Mayhew in 1641. Many English families moved to Nantucket to settle in Mayhew’s colony and a peace treaty was signed between the European settlers and the Wampanoag Native Americans which led to Nantucket not being involved in the King Philip’s War. Originally, Nantucket was part of New York but control of the island was later transferred to Massachusetts. Multiple towns were founded in Nantucket by 1795, and the settlements grew from there.

By 1830, whaling had become the primary industry in Nantucket. The economy of Nantucket completely collapsed in the 1840s during a major fire. Confederate raiders completely destroyed ships belonging to Nantucket’s whaling industry, and the island’s economy slid even further into recession. Nantucket’s economy picked up again after World War Two and many historic 19th century buildings were renovated.
